In the summer of 2025, the Friends of Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden met a key management goal by creating an endowment to support operations of the Garden and honor its legacy donors. The Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden Sustainability Fund was established by a small group of donors in collaboration with the Friends of Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden. Founding donations included generous gifts of $50,000 donated by Laura Ide in honor of Kazuyoshi Ide, and $50,000 donated by James and Patricia Todd in honor of Maile Melrose.
Donations to support the Endowment are being tracked and managed by HCF, where they will be pooled and invested. Each year, HCF will pay out to the Friends approximately 4% of the Fund’s average market value. Initially accumulated donations will not be spent, allowing the Endowment to grow.
The Endowment will support the Garden’s long-range strategic planning and conservation efforts to preserve the cultural landscape, conserve native, indigenous and Polynesian-introduced plants, control invasive plant and animal pests, and build stewardship capacity as a Community Forest. The endowment will support the Garden’s fiscal stability while it continues to seek and secure the full range of funding opportunities available.
