Wai‘anae Strong Fund in Honor of Darren Scheidt

Full Color

The Wai‘anae Strong Fund in Honor of Darren Scheidt was established by the founders of CalMed Hawaii, David Scheidt and his mother Levy Bynum along with their ‘ohana. The fund honors Levy’s son and David’s brother Darren, who became paralyzed at the age of 10, leading the family to relocate to Southern California to access spinal specialists who were not available on island at that time. As Darren’s caretaker, Levy educated herself on best practices for providing quality care and understanding how medical supply options contribute to a patient’s quality of life. Levy and Darren worked from a spare room in their Buena Park, CA residence, subcontracting a small medical supply company that provides disposable medical supplies to patients.

David graduated from Wai‘anae High School and earned a business degree from Pacific University. His career path led him to various corporate positions and opportunities and he eventually founded a medical supply business that benefits active-duty soldiers and their families. The business has offices in Hawai‘i, California, Washington, Arizona and Colorado. David credits their move to the Mainland and the experience that provided as being pivotal to his growth and success. The Scheidt ‘ohana established this fund to give back to their hometown of Wai‘anae, and to encourage and inspire the same opportunities for deserving students.
