Family Philanthropy

"At its best, family philanthropy draws on the passions and concerns of each individual, provides an opportunity for all participants to learn and grow, and has a real impact on the world."

“The Family Sharing was absolutely wonderful. What I like the most was hearing my family articulate their values. I liked seeing them engaged in the process and enjoyed hearing the questions everyone asked. The process let everyone feel like they mattered…”

From parents and two adult children after a “family sharing” retreat to introduce information about their private family foundation, discuss their values and their mission statement, and plan how they might participate in grantmaking and other aspects of their giving.

Family Philanthropy

Engaging the next generation in your charitable giving plan

Family Philanthropy has helped families become better equipped to preserve, use and share their wealth responsibly. The tools for accomplishing these goals could help almost any family to nurture responsible children, which ultimately benefits every community. Hawai‘i Community Foundation can help you and your family start the conversation on giving together.

Benefits of giving together

Families are finding that the process of making
charitable giving decisions together is a chance to:
  • Strengthen a family’s legacy of caring while growing the next generation of philanthropic leadership
  • Articulate shared and individually-held values to guide their charitable choices
  • Celebrate the uniqueness of each family member; a reminder that members of the family are the family’s best assets
  • Build intergenerational common ground and grow family connections
  • Practice and hone life skills related to fiscal responsibility, leadership, team work, accountability and addressing critical social issues
  • Work toward making a significant difference in the community

How we can support your Family Philanthropy

Whether or not you decide to give through the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, we can help you to think and carry through the process of engaging two or more generations in your giving.

We provide resources to help you make informed choices about:
  • The steps involved in structuring charitable gifts
  • Selecting the giving vehicle that matches your goals and needs, e.g. opening a donor advised fund or establishing a private foundation
  • How to address administrative and governance requirements
  • How to start the process of engaging younger generations
  • How to glean information about the nonprofit community
  • How to approach grantmaking and how to evaluate the impact of your giving

We work with you to facilitate your initial family gathering to share goals, values and plans for philanthropy. Hawai‘i Community Foundation is affiliated with the National Center for Family Philanthropy which gives you access to additional resources, including monthly audio-conferences on topics of interest to families who give together.
