Personal Statement

Submit a personal statement that answers the following questions:

What are your reasons for attending college?
Why did you choose your course of study?
What career goals do you have?
What does community service mean to you?

You should also include other information that will demonstrate that you are a worthy scholarship recipient. Your personal statement should describe any outstanding attributes and talents. Community service plays an important part in the decision-making process, so include any service you may have provided to your school or community. Rather than complete a separate essay, some scholarships ask that you address a specific topic in your personal statement.

Your personal statement should be typed, double-spaced and a minimum of 2 pages, but not more than 3. Please print "Personal Statement" at the top along with your first and last name so we can easily identify your personal statement from any essays that you may be submitting. Submit only ONE personal statement.

Student Aid Report (SAR)

Submit a copy of your SAR, which includes your name and the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) for the 2010-2011 academic year.

To receive you SAR, complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), using estimated numbers if necessary. After the FAFSA is processed, you will receive an output document - either an SAR (electronic or paper) or an SAR acknowledgement.

You may also access a copy of your SAR by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov and clicking on "view and print your Student Aid Report."

For more information about the FAFSA and to apply online, please visit www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Official Grade Transcript

Submit your most recent official grade transcript. If you are returning to college for another year, please visit your school's registrar's office to request a current transcript. If you will be attending college for the first time, you will need to request a transcript from your high school.

All transcripts must be original documents issued by your school. Your transcript may be sent to our office from your school or you may send it in with the rest of your scholarship materials. Unofficial transcripts, including grade reports from the Internet, are not acceptable.

Letters of Recommendation

Some scholarship funds require applicants to submit letters of recommendation. Carefully review the criteria for each fund to find out if you will need to submit letters.

Your letters of recommendation should come from teachers, counselors, ministers and/or employers as they can usually comment on overall character, achievement and promise. These letters must be current (dated after March 1, 2009), contain your first and last name, and signed by the writer. Letters from parents, friends and relatives will not be accepted.

Essay

Some scholarship funds require a separate essay about a particular subject specified in the criteria. The essay does not replace your personal statement. Scholarship funds requiring an essay rely heavily on this extra piece when final decisions are being made. Your essay should be typed and double-spaced. Please put the name of the scholarship along with your first and last name at the top of the page so we can easily identify your essay.

Deadline

Online application will close at 5:00 pm (Hawai‘i Standard Time) on Monday, March 1, 2010.
