Supporting Organizations

A supporting organization enables a family, business or existing foundation to affiliate with the Hawai‘i Community Foundation and utilize the many benefits afforded a community foundation. Hawai‘i Community Foundation is a beneficiary of two supporting organizations: the Robert E. Black Memorial Trust and the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust.

The benefits of having Hawai‘i Community Foundation as the beneficiary of a supporting organization include:

Independent board of directors
Distinct investment policy
Administrative details handled by Hawai‘i Community Foundation
Increased flexibility in grantmaking process

Robert E. Black Memorial Trust

As a long-time distribution committee member of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, Robert E. Black noted the effectiveness and efficiency of having a public foundation do the work of a hundred smaller funds. As a result, Robert directed that nearly all of his estate be made a supporting organization upon his death, naming Hawai‘i Community Foundation as the recipient. Because of his extremely generous gift, 10 nonprofit organizations will receive income in perpetuity. Additionally, Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s Board of Governors uses the remaining funds to support charitable causes in many different areas, including health, education and culture.

Parker Ranch Foundation Trust

The Parker Ranch Foundation Trust provides support to Parker School, Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy, North Hawai‘i Community Hospital and Hawai‘i Community Foundation. The Trust's mission is to maintain and improve a unique quality of life in the Kamuela area by providing perpetual support for the designated beneficiaries through the sound management and prudent investment of Trust assets.
