1. What is the Omidyar `Ohana Fund at Hawai`i Community Foundation?

Given the current economic crisis and hardships throughout Hawai`i, the Omidyars felt it was especially important at this time to expand their philanthropy in the islands. The fund will be part of a collective effort to improve the quality of life for people throughout Hawai`i.

2. Can we apply for assistance to the Omidyar `Ohana Fund at the Hawai`i Community Foundation?

The fund does not provide assistance to individuals. It also does not accept unsolicited proposals.

3. What is the Community Stabilization Initiative?

This is a six year, $8 million funding partnership aimed at stabilizing communities by helping families and individuals weather the recession and build towards the future. The initiative seeks to increase the utilization of available government resources and increase credit counseling and mortgage foreclosure prevention services and asset building strategies. The Omidyar `Ohana Fund is providing a lead grant of $4 million for this initiative that must be matched by other donors, foundations and government agencies over the six year period.

4. Who benefits from the Community Stabilization Initiative?

The entire state of Hawai`i will benefit from the positive impact this fund will generate as families and communities continue to weather the economic crisis facing all of us. In addition, parts of the initiative are designed to help residents and communities re-tool for the future.

5. How will the Community Stabilization Initiative be administered?

Hawai`i Community Foundation will spearhead and oversee the program by first convening social service agencies and government entities, those who are at the frontline dealing with increased demands for housing and food assistance as well as credit and mortgage counseling. The specific details of the initiative are still being developed, but please check back to this site for updates and announcements.

6. What is Innovation Fund?

The Omidyar Innovation Fund will be a new competitive grantmaking program that will launch in 2010. It is aimed at spurring innovation in Hawai`i’s social sector. Pam and Pierre Omidyar have committed $6 million over six years for this program which will provide matching funds for qualifying organizations. Announcements relating to this initiative will be posted here as details develop.
