Funds Established by Donors on Hawai‘i IslandScholarship FundsDonor Advised Funds Community Benefit Funds (Field of Interest) Designated Funds Persons in Need Funds Scholarship FundsEarl Bakken Engineering Fund. Philanthropist Earl Bakken set up this fund to provide scholarship grants to residents of the Island of Hawai'i seeking a degree in Engineering. Preference shall be given to students of Hawaiian ancestry.
Hilo Chinese School Scholarship Fund . This fund was established in 2006 to provide scholarships for descendents of students who attended Hilo Chinese School or for students of Chinese ancestry residing on Hawai'i Island.
Fletcher & Fritzi Hoffman Educational Fund. This scholarship fund provides grants to students who have been longtime residents of the Hamakua Coast who are attending a college or vocational school on Hawai‘i Island. Preference is given to students from families who worked in the sugar plantation industry.
Hoku Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund, established in 2006, will provide grants to students who are pursuing an observatory career with a chosen major in physics, astronomy, mathematics, engineering, technology or computer sciences.
Hokuli'a Foundation Scholarship Fund. The Hokuli'a Foundation established this fund in 2008 to provide scholarships to students from North and South Kona. The current focus is on students studying in the fields of healthcare, education or social work with a preference for students in those fields that demonstrate advancing Native Hawaiian culture.
Isemoto Contracting Company Fund. This Hilo based company set up a fund in 2006 to provide scholarships for Big Island students already enrolled in civil engineering, teaching or nursing programs.
Arthur Jackman Scholarship Fund. Clytie Mead established this scholarship fund in honor of her grandfather Arthur Jackman who made his fortune working from the bottom up in the steel industry. The purpose of this fund is to provide grants to students from Hawai'i Island for technical or vocational training.
Kahiau Scholarship Fund.This scholarship fund was established in 2007 by the Kahiau Foundation to provide scholarships to graduates from North Kohala High School to attend college on the mainland or O'ahu.
Koehnen Ltd. Scholarship Fund. The family of Koehnen Interiors of Hilo established this scholarship fund to provide scholarships to the children of retail store employees around the island.
Kohala Ditch Educational Fund. Rodney Inaba, owner of the "Flumin the Ditch" ride operated in the Kohala irrigation ditch prior to the 2006 earthquake, set up this fund to benefit students from Kohala High School.
Gerrit R. Ludwig Scholarship Fund. This fund will provide scholarships for students from East Hawai‘i high schools who want to major in fine arts and the classics. The first scholarships were awarded in 2005.
Lutkenhouse & Hawai‘i Tropical Botanical Garden Scholarship & Educational Fund.The owner of the Tropical Botanical Garden outside of Hilo set up this fund for residents of the Hilo and Hamakua Coast, north of the Wailuku River. These scholarships support students majoring in agriculture, science, medicine or nursing.
Senator Richard M. and Dr. Ruth H. Matsuura Scholarship Fund.This scholarship will be for graduates of Hilo and Waiakea High Schools.
Nick Van Pernis Scholarship Fund. This scholarship fund was established by Mark and Kristi Van Pernis in memory of their son, Nick. Scholarships are awarded to graduates of public or private high schools in the Districts of North Kona, South Kona, North Kohala, South Kohala or Ka‘u pursuing studies in the fields of marine sciences, biotechnology, health sciences or early childhood education.
Sarah Rosenberg Scholarship Fund. This fund, in memory of Kealakehe senior, Sarah Rosenberg, will support several scholarships for academic, community leadership and vocational education for students of Kealakehe High School. In addition, a scholarship will be awarded to a student in his/her final year of education studies.
H.C. Shipman Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be for graduates of Keaau High Schools. Vocational education awards are also available.
March Taylor Education Fund. This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Auto Body of Hawai'i's founder for West Hawai'i students to be trained in the field of auto body repair.
Shelley M. Williams RPh Scholarship Fund. This fund was established in memory of Kona's only compounding pharmacist, to support students attending pharmacy school.
Donor Advised FundsOscar L. & Ernestine H. Armstrong Fund. This donor advised fund established by the Armstrongs who resided for many years in West Hawai‘i. Although Mrs. Armstrong no longer resides in Hawai‘i, her attorney makes grant recommendations for nonprofit organizations in West Hawai‘i.
Clark Realty Corporation Community Fund. This fund, established in 2005, was set up for realtors and others to contribute to various projects in the community. Their most recent grant supported Habitat for Humanity.
Stan Czerwinski Education Fund. Established in 2006, in memory of Stan Czerwinski, this fund will support education. For the present, the family plans to support preschools in North Hawai‘i.
Deviants from the Norm Fund. After moving to Hawai‘i Island from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Kate Bell and Tom Blackburn established this fund to benefit organizations that support alternative voices.
Hapa Fund. A long-time resident of Waimea set up the Hapa Fund to support grass-roots fundraising efforts for nonprofit groups in the area. Grants will match hands-on fundraising efforts such as car washes, bread sales, etc.
Kuki‘o Community Fund. This fund was established to provide a way for the residents at Kuki‘o to participate in the local community through charitable donations to this fund. The focus for grantmaking is activities for children, youth and families that contribute to increasing positive social development and reducing risk-taking behaviors.
Jim & Lynn Lally Family Fund. This fund was recently established by a couple who is very active in supporting a variety of charitable organizations on Hawai`i Island and O`ahu. They are especially interested in educational opportunities for the island's youth.
Livable Communities Fund. Waikoloa resident, Vivian Green wants to support organizations that help make that community a good place to live.
Moonglow Fund. Experienced anonymous donors wanted Hawaii Community Foundation to handle the details of providing due diligence for nonprofits, suggesting projects for funding, issuing the checks, etc. The fund will continue to support organizations such as the local hospital, Bishop Museum and other charitable causes of the donor's interest.
Pahiki Nui Fund. Scholarship donors Clytie Mead and Peter Sparks set up this fund to increase the chances for success for students attending public schools on the Big Island.
Kevin Kai`ea Pavel Memorial Fund. David and Cheryl Pavel established this fund in memory of their son, Kevin to support basketball and educational related activities in the Hilo community.
Quack Moore Music Fund. Quack and Richard Moore set up this fund to support students from Hawai`i Island to participate in programs such as summer music camps that advance gifted music students.
Gordon Russell Fund. Gordon Russell is a part-time resident of Hawai`i Island with an interest in learning more about this island and supporting critical needs.
Daniel R. Sayre Memorial Fund. Frank and Laura Sayre established this fund in memory of their son, Daniel who lost his life in a tragic accident in Pololu Valley. This fund annually recognizes the bravery of the Hawai‘i County Fire Rescue squads and provides monetary support to purchase needed rescue equipment for their department.
Margaret & John Ushijima Fund. This is a donor advised fund set-up by Margaret and John Ushijima. Grants have been made from this fund to the Women's Fund, the teen center in Keaau and for emergency kits for elders in Ocean View.
Irene and Alan Weinberg Fund. New residents Irene and Alan Weinberg wanted to continue their philanthropic tradition in their new community. Their search for a local community foundation on this island led them to Hawaii Community Foundation and inspired our realtor outreach program. Community Benefit Funds (Field of Interest)Hartwell & Rebecca Carter Fund. Rebecca Carter used a charitable remainder trust to establish this fund which benefits charitable organizations serving the residents of West Hawai‘i. The West Hawai‘i Fund Advisory Board was named by Mrs. Carter to make the grant recommendations.
Hawai‘i Island Fund. The Hawai‘i Island Fund was established by contributions from Hawai‘i Community Foundation's unrestricted fund and part-time resident Gordon Russell. Currently, the fund is focused on programs that promote positive social behaviors for young people in East Hawai‘i. .
Arthur Mullaly Fund. This fund was established in 2005 to support environmental projects with grants awarded by the West Hawai'i Fund advisory board members.
Robert C. & Helen F. Nichols Fund. Robert and Helen Nichols established this fund to support programs that provide for the care of youth and the elderly, drug abuse prevention and other charitable purposes. Nichols Fund grants are distributed by the West Hawai‘i Fund advisory board.
Richard Smart Fund. The Richard Smart Fund was established by Richard Smart and is supported by a portion of the income from the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust. The purpose of the fund is to support health care, educational and charitable purposes that improve the general welfare and quality of life for the people of Waimea.
West Hawai‘i Fund. The West Hawai‘i Fund was established in 1991 by a group of community-minded residents of West Hawai‘i who wanted to build a permanent endowment to support needs in their community. Robert Blaine Thomas Fund. - For the Thelma Parker Library Persons in Need FundsAdrienne Wong Toyozaki Fund. Former Bank of Hawai‘i trust officer, Judy Malagday, helped an anonymous donor establish this fund to provide support to organizations assisting women and girls suffering from potentially fatal illnesses. Grants are given to the East and West Hawai‘i offices of the American Cancer Society for distribution to women and girls dealing with cancer.
